Glossary of Terms

Deuteragonist - Secondary character in a story. He or she is also the second protagonist, who either sides with or plays against the protagonist. Not a sidekick. The character is often able to function independent from the protagonist.

Fandom - Community surrounding a fictional work. Includes internet presence, fan fiction, game mods, etc...

Interactive fiction - Blanket term referring to various types of literature and media that actively involve the player or reader. Choose Your Own Adventure books are a form of this, as are many video games.

Retrogaming - The acquisition and collecting of older games, either for economic or nostalgiac purposes. Can also be called "old school gaming."

Shovelware - Low quality games produced in large quantities. Can also refer to numerous accessories released for the system and specific games (which may or may not also be shovelware).

Topical dispersal - The manner in which books on different topics are distributed in a library. Concerns the number of books on particular topics, number available, how widely the books are distributed on the shelves and the books approximate location in the library.

Video Game Crash of 1983 - Cataclysm brought about by an influx of shovelware into the market. One notable factor is Atari's game E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Leads to the eventual rise of Nintendo in prominence.
